The 3-Paragraph Cover Letter That Actually Gets Read
Recruiters spend 11 seconds on your cover letter. Here's the exact 3-paragraph formula that holds their attention — and the 4 things to never include.
Most cover letters get scanned for 11 seconds and rejected. Yours doesn't have to. The formula below has helped real candidates land roles at Stripe, Apple, and a hundred YC startups. It's three paragraphs. That's it.
Paragraph 1: The hook (2-3 sentences)
Don't start with "I am writing to apply for…" — recruiters delete those. Start with the most interesting, relevant fact about you tied to the role. "I built ClientCo's customer success function from 0 to 1,200 accounts. The role of Head of CS at [Company] is the natural next step for me."
You're proving in two sentences that you (a) understand what they need, and (b) have done it before.
Paragraph 2: The proof (4-5 sentences)
Pick ONE story from your career that maps directly to the job description. Not three stories — one. Tell it like a mini case study: situation → action → result. Numbers always.
Example: "When the support team at Acme was drowning in tickets, I designed a new triage system that cut response time from 6 hours to 40 minutes and reduced our backlog by 73% in 8 weeks. That experience is exactly why I'm excited about your team's current scale challenges."
Paragraph 3: The close (2 sentences)
Show you've done your homework on them. "I've been a [Company] customer for two years and saw how the recent pricing changes opened up the mid-market — that's exactly the kind of expansion problem I want to work on. I'd love to discuss how I could help."
Specific. Researched. Forward-looking. Done.
4 things to never put in your cover letter
- A summary of your resume (they'll read the resume).
- A list of your skills (they're on your resume too).
- "I'm a hard worker and a fast learner" — empty calories.
- Why YOU want the job. Recruiters care why THEY should want you.
The whole letter in 8 sentences
A great cover letter is 200-300 words total. If yours is longer, you're padding. Cut until every sentence is doing real work.
